Below:  Warren Oates (in the role of Frank Mansfield), is seen motoring down the road behind the wheel of his 1959 Cadillac.  The low-budget nature of the Cockfighter shoot was typified by the fact that none of the male actors, including Oates, wore make-up.  And the women who wore make-up were responsible for applying it themselves.

Director Monte Hellman, who also directed Oates in The Shooting (1967) and Two Lane Blacktop (1972), was pleased to be working with Oates again, but was far from satisfied with the crew hired by producer Roger Corman.  In a 1976 interview, Hellman voiced his displeasure with the "inexperienced" and "incompetent" crew.  One notable exception to this was Spanish-born cinematographer Nestor Almendros whom Hellman was excited to have on board.
