The original Atlanta Life Insurance Company Building located at 142 - 148 Auburn Avenue.  As reported on the New Georgia Encyclopedia website:  "Atlanta Life Insurance Company was founded by Alonzo Herndon, a prominent black businessman in Atlanta, in 1905. After Herndon's death, leadership of the company passed to his son, Norris Herndon, in 1927 and then to Jesse Hill in 1973. The company is headquartered in Atlanta's Sweet Auburn district."   Google map

Herndon was born into slavery in 1858 near Social Circle, Georgia about 40 miles east of Atlanta.  He eventually made his way to Atlanta and opened several very successful barber shops, including one at 66 Peachtree Street.

The Herndon Home, located at 587 University Place, NW in the Vine City neighborhood is a National Historic Landmark.
