Steve Myers, a reporter for the Red And Black, the University of Georgia's student-run newspaper, caught wind of the fact that Cockfighter was being filmed in his back yard and decided it was a newsworthy event.  After calling the Public Relations office in the Georgia capitol and getting nowhere, Myers' tenacity led him to contact Roger Corman's New World Pictures offices in Los Angeles, where he reached someone who gave him co-producer Sam Gelfman's phone number.

Gelfman agreed to help and coordinated interviews with director Monte Hellman, star Warren Oates, and cinematographer Nestor Almendros.  Myers' article appeared in the November 7, 1974 edition of the Red And Black.

The interviews took place at the Squire Inn (5750 Roswell Rd), where the cast and crew were staying and where they did some filming in one of the hotel rooms.   The Squire Inn later became a Days Inn and from the looks of this Google map (click on the satellite photo view) it has been torn down.
