This monument to the unknown Confederate dead can be found in Oakland cemetery and was unveiled in 1894 by sculptor T.M. Brady to commemorate the 3,000 unknown Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War and are buried in the cemetery.  In addition to the 3,000 unknown Confederate soldiers buried at Oakland, there are another 3,900 in marked graves.

The statue closely resembles Switzerland's Lion Monument, completed in 1821, which celebrates the sacrifices of Swiss mercenary soldiers who died while fighting in the French Revolution in 1792.    Google map
