Hard to believe perhaps, but Stewart Avenue (Metropolitan Parkway these days) used to house a no frills steak house with an escapist western theme.  The long gone J - D (pronounced J Bar D) Steak Ranch restaurant, with its inviting giant cactus sign, can be seen on this late 1970s postcard.  The restaurant, just north of the former Alamo Plaza Motel, was located at 2214 Stewart Avenue SW.  As you can see if you scroll down, the building still stands though it's definitely been dilapidating pretty severely, enough so that the City Of Atlanta recently posted a notice on the front door about the building's possible demolition.   (Google map)

I walked through a big gap in the chain link fence to get a photo of that notice, as well as a couple shots of the inside of the restaurant and an old wrought-iron J - D sign featuring the restaurant's wagon wheel and horseshoe motif, all of which can be seen below.

All photos other than those on the postcard were taken on 09/10/11.
