This photo (from the LIFE magazine archives) shows Senator Richard B. Russell at a 1952 event on Peachtree Street.  This was during his unsuccessful campaign for President.  Russell, a Democrat, came in behind Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee and Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois.  In the eventual election, Stevenson lost to Republican Dwight Eisenhower.

This view looks south toward Five Points.  Russell (1987 - 1971), a native of the nearby town of Winder, served in the U.S. Senate from 1933 - 1971 and was the Senate's most senior member at the time of his death.
