This race track was built in approximately 1909 by Coca Cola magnate Asa Candler and was known as Candler Field.

It was later the site of Atlanta's first airport, also known as Candler Field.

By 1923, the racetrack was abandoned.  When newly-elected alderman William Hartsfield was tapped by Mayor Walter Sims to identify a good location for an airport facility, this is the site he chose.

After his death in 1971, the airport would be renamed in honor of Mayor Hartsfield.

After the death of former Mayor Maynard Jackson in 2003, the airport was again renamed and is today known as Hartsfield -Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
